BassFan World Rankings PRESENTED BY

Updated: 3/29/2004

Jordon Is No. 1 Again

Following are the State Farm-BassFan World Rankings as updated after last week's Bassmaster Tour event on Santee Cooper, the last event of the 2004 Bassmaster Tour season. Notable items:

> Thanks partly to Kelly Jordon's win at Santee (he also dropped a 156th-place finish at Lake Ouachita 2 years ago), he is back in the No. 1 slot, and has a healthy 6.4-point lead over Kevin VanDam.

> Unless VanDam fishes an FLW Tour event this year, he has no more opportunities to improve his position until the Bassmaster Classic since, as stated at the beginning of the tour seasons (and again below), the new Bassmaster Elite 50 series events won't be counted in the World Rankings this year.

> Jordon is fishing the Beaver Lake FLW this week with only 2 days of practice because his Santee win delayed him getting there. Whether this will hurt him in the tournament, and in the rankings, remains to be seen. On the plus side for Jordon, he has a chance to once again fish both championships, which will help him vs. VanDam, who will only fish the Classic this year.

> Alton Jones remains in 3rd, and is les than 2 points away from VanDam.

> Greg Hackney had his third Top 10 and fourth Top 20 in a row at Santee, and moves up one spot into 4th. He's only 1.1 points behind Jones.

> Mark Davis drops one spot to 5th.

> Skeet Reese remains in 6th, and Gary Klein and Tommy Biffle switch places and are now 7th and 8th respectively.

> David Dudley moves back into the Top 10 in 9th, and will have an opportunity this week to improve his position.

> Bassmaster Angler of the Year (AOY) winner Gerald Swindle remains the 10th-ranked angler in the world. (Reminder: Titles mean nothing in the World Rankings. Also, no bonus points are given for winning AOY because the finishes that went into that season are already accounted for in the rankings.)

> Dean Rojas continues to climb and is now 11th. Ditto for Alvin Shaw, who is now 13th.

> A 10th-place finish at Santee helps Aaron Martens jump up seven slots to 14th.

> Shaw Grigsby had two Top 20s in a row and is now in 18th.

> Davy Hite, who has fished well this season, climbs 12 spots into 35th. He finished 19th at Santee.

Notes

> Again, at this time BassFan won't include BASS's new Elite 50 series in the world rankings. The reason is that the E50s aren't based on strict qualifying. Technically speaking, both tour fields also aren't based 100 percent on strict qualifying (via points), but that's "under the table," is for the most part equal, and in any case the vast majority of the field qualifies based on current tour or Open/EverStart points. By contrast, in the Elite 50s, the use of all-time winnings doesn't reflect current performance. These are essentially "provisional" slots – which account for 40% of the field – to ensure the inclusion of fan favorites, making these more "exhibition"-type events. BassFan will revisit the E50 decision after the current E50 season, in large part because BASS intends to make less use of the all-time winnings list for future E50 fields.

> Because of the compressed six-event Bassmaster Tour season this year, pros who only fish that tour won't have a chance to help or hurt themselves in the World Rankings until this summer's Bassmaster Classic. FLW Tour pros have fished three regular-season events and have three more to fish, including this week's event on Beaver Lake.

About the World Rankings

The BassFan World Rankings are the only statistical, multi-year, comprehensive rankings of the world's best professional bass anglers, and are the official World Rankings of the sport.

Why

The BassFan World Rankings were created in 2001 to answer a simple question - who is the best professional bass angler in the world? and to give fishing fans a way to track their favorite pros, as well as to show the non-fishing world that consistently catching fish isn't "just luck."

While the two leagues - B.A.S.S. and FLW Outdoors - have their own single-year point races (called Angler of the Year races, which are not rankings), and "power rankings" are starting to crop up in the sport, these are not World Rankings. World Rankings in all professional sports are complex, multi-year statistical endeavors simply because that's the only way to accurately and fairly show consistent performance over time.

Until BassFan did it, no one produced a statistical, multi-year ranking system for professional bass fishing using results from the top tours. These used to be the Bassmaster Tour and Majors along with the FLW Tour and FLW Series, but as of January 2011 are the Bassmaster Elite Series and FLW Tour. The BassFan World Rankings will also include results from other competitive (i.e., non-exhibition) tournaments that feature the world's top pros, like the Bassmaster Classic and Forrest Wood Cup.

How

Here's a brief overview of what's involved in calculating the BassFan World Rankings. (For confidentiality reasons, the proprietary methodology won't be discussed in detail.)

  • The rankings are based on angler performance in top-level B.A.S.S. and FLW events. These events are the top ones in the sport and attract the top fishermen.
  • Events are weighted based on strength of field (calculated using the BassFan World Rank of everyone in the field) and size of field, meaning that it's easier to do well in smaller-field events than larger-field ones.
  • Bonus points are given for winning and for placing in the top 10 percent in all regular-season events. No bonuses are given for league Angler of the Year awards, points or standings because that data is already accounted for in the World Rankings methodology.
  • Championships are treated differently than regular-season tournaments.
  • The BassFan World Rankings methodology ensures that anglers who fish only one circuit are not at a disadvantage verus anglers who fish more than one. Rather, anglers who fish more events have more chances to do better (or worse) than anglers who fish fewer events. A simple example: six 5th-place finishes are better than three, and four 100th-place finishes are worse than two.
  • The rankings use data from the current and immediately prior years only (a rolling 2-calendar year cycle), and are updated after each major tournament.
  • The rankings are not an indication of who is/was the best bass angler ever. That is not a World Rankings. It's a list.
  • As with all World Rankings in all sports, the methodology used in the BassFan World Rankings calculation will change over time based on feedback from interested parties.
  • Bassmaster Opens, FLW Series (formerly Stren/EverStart) and Bass Fishing League (BFL) tournament data are not included in the BassFan World Rankings because these are "minor-league" or "triple-A" events.
