Brent Ehrler's dominating lead has made the tournament largely a battle for 2nd.
|
Brent Ehrler could probably sleep in tomorrow if he wanted to. Heck, he could sit in a coffee shop and read the paper. A little hyperbole, yes, but he's leading the Table Rock FLW Tour by a massive 14-pound margin and only one pro who made the Top 5 cut caught better than 14 pounds today.
Ehrler's performance so far has been nothing short of stunning. Over 4 days, he has yet to catch less than 14 pounds, and he weighed the heaviest sack of the tournament yesterday (22-02).
And consider this: More than half the field failed to catch better than 14 pounds total over 3 days. In other words, Ehrler's lead is more than the total 3-day weight of 89 other pros.
It's certainly his event to lose, and stranger things have happened. But for anyone else to have a legitimate shot, Ehrler would pretty much have to blank. If he catches one keeper (2 pounds), 2nd-place Ron Shuffield would need to weigh 16 pounds tomorrow to win, a weight Shuffield hasn't touched yet. In fact, nobody in the final Top 5 has caught more than 15 1/2 pounds the previous 2 days.
That said, Greg Pugh said he had the fish on to have a bag in the mid-30s on day 1.
Ehrler's still not talking about what he's doing, but it wouldn't be a surprise to find out he's throwing a swimbait – Table Rock's deep, clear water is the perfect complement to his California roots.
Another factor in Ehrler's favor: Check-in tomorrow's at 2:45, so there's less time for the field to capitalize on a late-afternoon bite.
For reference, here's a look at the final Top 5 who made the cut and will fish tomorrow. Aside from Ehrler, the rest of the weights are comparable.
1. Brent Ehrler -- Redlands, Ca -- 5, 16-06 -- 5, 22-02 -- 5, 14-06 -- 15, 52-14
2. Ron Shuffield -- Bismarck, Ar -- 3, 9-05 -- 5, 15-06 -- 5, 14-04 -- 13, 38-15
3. Bryan Thrift -- Shelby, Nc -- 5, 14-13 -- 5, 14-03 -- 4, 9-14 -- 14, 38-14
4. Greg Pugh -- Cullman, Al -- 5, 18-11 -- 4, 10-08 -- 4, 9-05 -- 13, 38-08
5. Mike Wurm -- Hot Springs, Ar -- 5, 16-14 -- 5, 13-05 -- 3, 7-09 -- 13, 37-12
Shuffield moved into the Top 5 by virtue of his 14-04 today (he was previously 10th).
Wurm started the day in 2nd and 8 pounds behind Ehrler, but came up two fish short today.
First out of the cut was Scott Martin, who weighed three for 10-06 today.

Ehrler is reportedly fishing trees on main-lake points – the classic pre-spawn pattern at Table Rock.

Ehrler Nervous
With such a huge lead, many BassFans would assume Ehrler's calm, collected and ready to close the deal. Not so. He's nervous, he's fairly emotional, and he was still working on tackle late tonight. Sure, he's jacked up about tomorrow, but he's still young and a win right now, with the sagging economic conditions in the sport, would be huge for him.
"It's pretty awesome – I've never been in this position before," he said. "It's a brand new experience, and boy I like it. But still, I'm real nervous. I don't know how many fish I can catch tomorrow. I wish it was more like a 20-pound lead. Then I wouldn't have to worry about anything. I'm probably more nervous in this position than if I was a pound behind. I wish I was calm and easy and it was no big deal."
He bounced around a little bit later this afternoon, but again caught the bulk of his weight from his primary area. He had his limit by 9:00 and culled once at noon. He was afraid to leave and surrender the water, and in fact had another competitor pull in on him today
"I know where I'm going to sit tomorrow," he said.
He won the Shasta Western FLW Series to start the year, and said to win again would be "incredible."
"It would be huge," he added. "I was real nervous about the start of the season because of so few sponsors – I was just real nervous – and this would mean so much to me right now. It would have to be the most important win of my career. I can't officially say that, because the (Forrest Wood) Cup was, but it would be a huge deal for me right now."
2nd: Shuffield Realistic
Ron Shuffield found himself looking straight down the barrel of reality today. The rest of the Top 5 below him made the cut largely off their big day-1 weights, but Shuffield started slow with 9 1/2 pounds and improved from there. Still, his 14-04 sack today didn't bring him within shouting distance of Ehrler.
"As I predicted yesterday, this is Brent Ehrler's tournament to win or lose," Shuffield said. "And I'm not around the quality to make up a major deficit. I had a quick limit today by about 9:45, like yesterday. So I'm around some fish and I have this little deal going where I might be able to pick off five tomorrow. I just have to keep doing what I'm doing and fish my tail off."
He said he's throwing a jerkbait in water anywhere from 18 to 42 feet deep. His fish are suspended near vertical structure.
"I'm fishing everything I can see that's in the water away from the shoreline. Basically, that's all I'm doing. I'm just glad to be in the Top 5. It's really been a blessed week for me."

Ron Shuffield moved into the cut with the third-heaviest stringer of the day.
|
About whether he's shocked that someone could post such a huge lead during a tough bite, he said: "Considering the quality of Brent's ability, I'm not really surprised that Brent's leading it. Without a doubt, he's one of the Top 3 anglers in the world in my opinion. He's right there with the best of the best. He excels when we get on these deep, clear lakes, so I'm not surprised to see him that far ahead. In fact, I'm surprised his lead isn't greater than that. He probably backed off his fish today pretty quick."
3rd: Thrift's Slow Morning
Bryan Thrift's made his living this week with a red-hot morning bite, but it all started to unravel today and he came in with just four fish.
"It was a lot tougher," he noted. "I pulled up to the place where I'd been catching a decent limit early and I caught three keepers in the first 20 minutes. I never caught another keeper. I finally scrambled around and caught one on a crank an hour before weigh-in."
About Ehrler's massive lead, he said: "He's on them strong and he's going to be real hard to beat. Actually, one of the places I'm fishing is a place he's fishing first thing in the morning. I didn't know that until today."
Thrift noted that he and Ehrler are fishing a little differently, and Ehrler's throwing "a little different bait, but he's just figured out how to get the bigger bites."
4th: Pugh Got Limbed
Pugh's been fighting the trees all week long. That's where the big ones live, but he's been wrapped more times than he cares to count, and he said he had the opportunity for a mid-30s bag on day 1, but lost half that weight in the trees (even though he's using 20-pound fluoro).
"It's just tough to get them out of the trees," he said. "It's aggravating and frustrating. You push and push and push and finally get them to bite, then they go down and wrap around a limb and you can't pull them out."

Bryan Thrift's crucial morning bite only produced three keepers today.
|
He did get a 3-pounder unwrapped today, but only brought four fish to the scales. And he had his limit fish on several times. He said he's fishing a 5/8-ounce Lunker Lure jig and will likely go to 25-pound line tomorrow.
About whether he could possibly catch Ehrler tomorrow, he said: "I've had several people ask me that. Right now, there's 7 ounces between me and 2nd place, and there's 14 pounds separating me and 1st. Anything can happen. If I can get those five fish to bite that I lost on day 1, (Ehrler) would have to catch 20 pounds to beat me.
"But it's so hard to go out and catch a 30-pound-plus bag on a lake like this. I had the opportunity the first day to be in the mid- to high-30s. If I can get four or five of those 6s to bite, and one 8- or 9-pounder, it would make for an interesting weigh-in."
5th: Wurm Gunning For 2nd
"As far as I'm concerned, it's a battle for 2nd," Wurm said. He brought three fish to the scales today for 7-09.
"Brent leads by 14 pounds, and I haven't caught that much weight in any one day, so I don't see how the heck I can do it. Maybe if he stays home I'll have an outside shot."
He noted that he's not shocked to see someone with such a big lead – Table Rock's got the size to amass a lead like that. "There's lots of 4- to 5-pounders, and somebody's going to get on those and catch them consistently, and that's what happened. Everybody else is just struggling."
His bag today included two good fish and one keeper. He caught several shorts but never could add number four or five. He stuck with his main area (he eased off it the previous 2 days), and doesn't have anything else, so he plans to grind all day there again tomorrow.
7th: Rose Mixed
Mark Rose finished a little more than 3 pounds behind the cut. He caught better than 12 pounds the first 2 days, but limped in with four fish today for 9-09.
"I'm a little disappointed that I didn't catch my fifth today," he said. "If I did, I would have been right on the borderline for making the cut. But in the same breath, I'm very thankful to have caught what I caught. I had one little deep spot and I was thankful to have that. You're always wanting to do a little better, but at the same time, you have to be thankful and keep it all in perspective."
He caught all spotted bass from his deep spot – he called it his "safety net" – and his two weapons were a grub and a 3 1/2-inch Strike King Shadalicious (swimbait).
"I was swimming them deep for those spots. I could catch five every morning (the first 2 days), then go fishing and relax. I just could never get a kicker fish. And today I could only catch four. I probably should have stayed there, but I knew I needed a big fish and I was trying to make it happen.
"I don't really understand what's going on with the crankbait fish, the jerkbait fish – it should be red-hot," he added. "I guess the water's been cold for so long that even though it's getting sun, those fish are frozen there and they're not coming up yet."
