Day 1 Leaders Repeat
Ike Overtakes Reed On Day 2, Evers 3rd

Friday, August 01, 2008

Winds are expected to shift to the north, so Ike's Canadian water that he hasn't touched yet could be a deciding factor.

Lake Erie's the type of fishery where a hot hump or reef can keep kicking fish out for 4 straight days. It's also the type of place where it can be hard to mount a comeback if you didn't discover that right hump or reef in practice. There's just too much water to start over.

So it's no surprise at all that those who caught 'em on day 1 did so again today, under conditions that were overall calm at times and not rough until the ride back in. In fact, the water was so calm at Dunkirk, several pros pushed their fishing time down there and barely made it back when they encountered a blow halfway home.

That's because Dunkirk's fine in a southwest wind like the one today, but halfway to Buffalo the shoreline juts north and a southwest wind kicks things up. Aaron Martens fished Dunkirk and made it back with 6 minutes to spare. Kota Kiriyama made it back in the nick of time. Terry Butcher was 3 minutes late.

Mike Iaconelli had the best day today. He weighed 22-15 (call it 23 pounds), and moved up from 3rd yesterday to lead after 2 days with a 44-05 total.

Less than a pound behind Ike is day-1 leader Matt Reed, who followed up with 20-03 today. Reed's not running all the way to Dunkirk – he's likely fishing in the vicinity of Silver Creek – and his day might have been a lot better, but he was stuck with a dead 2 1/2-pounder and the culling of dead fish is against BASS rules.

Next comes last year's winner Edwin Evers, who improved a spot today to 3rd. Evers caught 21-11 at Dunkirk, which was 8 ounces better than his day-1 bag.

Kota Kiriyama likewise improved a spot. He's fishing the Dunkirk vicinity, and his 21-14 was second only to Ike's big bag.

In 5th is Aaron Martens, who was 2nd yesterday. Martens dumped a 7-pounder at Dunkirk today, a fish he said was "a monster – a different class of fish. I caught one like it in practice last year, and those are the two largest smallmouths I've ever seen."

Here's a look at the current Top 12. Total weight is followed by distance from leader in red.

1. Mike Iaconelli: 44-05
2. Matt Reed: 43-06 0-15
3. Edwin Evers: 42-14 1-07
4. Kota Kiriyama: 42-13 1-08
5. Aaron Martens: 42-11 1-10
6. John Murray: 41-08 2-13
7. Brian Snowden: 40-11 3-10
8. Todd Faircloth: 40-08 3-13
9. Shaw Grigsby: 38-12 5-09
9. Bill Lowen: 38-12 5-09
11. Takahiro Omori: 38-11 5-10
12. Rick Morris: 38-02 6-03

The lake was wide-open today – anglers could run where they wanted and there was enough wind to drag, but it was light enough to hold on top of structure. And that could be the case again tomorrow. The NOAA marine forecast calls for waves from 2 to 3 feet with winds from the southeast turning northwest.

The bad news for the Dunkirk flotilla is the chance for true north winds for a significant portion of Saturday and all of Sunday. North winds would blow straight onto Dunkirk, and create a serious chop quite quickly.

It's tough to say who's got the advantage right now. With so many boats at Dunkirk, the fish have been at least a little worked over. Several boats are on Evers' winning spot from last year, so that could throw the advantage to Reed and Iaconelli.

Crucial, too, is that Ike said he's got Canadian water he hasn't touched yet. If a north wind ramps up, day 4 might be all about Canada, since that'll be the only protected bank.

Kevin VanDam made a major comeback today, and is close to preserving his lead in the BASS Angler of the Year (AOY) race. He and Faircloth are neck-in-neck in the race. Faircloth finished day 1 in 8th, while VanDam limped in at 32nd.

Faircloth pretty much matched his day-1 weight today, but VanDam caught 20 pounds and moved up to 14th – about a pound and a half off the Top 12 cut pace.

The field is now cut to 50 anglers for tomorrow. Zell Rowland, with 30-06, was last in the cut.

So Far So Good For Ike

After he caught 21-06 on day 1, Iaconelli talked about how excited he was about his prospects for the weekend.

Today, after he whacked nearly 23 pounds of bronze, he spoke with confidence about the pattern he's running. It's one that he hopes turns out to be weatherproof.

For the Runnemeade, N.J. pro, excitement and confidence could prove to be a lethal combination as he carries the lead into the weekend.

"I've been in this spot a lot of times," Ike said. "It's a good feeling, but you have to go fish and have fun."

He weighed a 5-11 and a 5-10 today to anchor his bag.

While he hasn't seen one of his fish spit up a goby, he's sure that's what they're dining on and that's what he's trying to replicate with his Tru-Tungsten and Berkley baits with a dropshot program.

"I can almost guarantee you that about 90% of their diet out here is gobies," he said. "The other 10% is probably crawfish."

Ike's bag was anchored by 5-10 and 5-11 bruisers, one of which is shown here.

His runs haven't been quite as long as the mega-jaunts some of the other leaders have made. He's fishing Silver Creek and closer and still has options open depending on what the weather does.

"I really fish different areas for the wind," he noted. "I haven't even gotten to my Canadian stuff. If the wind would shift out of the North, that was a bank I had. I may even dabble over there as the event goes on. We'll see what happens."

He worked through the same spots as day 1 and was able to control his baits better in the lighter winds. He's also targeting fish in different depths than he was last year.

"Last year, I fished 40 to 45 (feet)," he said. "This year, I'm fishing in more of the to 30 to 35 range. I'm almost 10 feet shallower than I was last year and that's a key zone for me. I'm trying to keep my boat in that zone."

He's been careful not to get on top of his fish but he's not long-casting to get to them either.

"A lot of guys won't even cast until they see one," he said. "I like to fish until I see one so I'm keeping it close enough that if I do see one on the graph, I can quick reel it in and drop. I'm almost maximizing my opportunities vs. the guys who are waiting to see them."

2nd: Lost Fish, Dead Fish May Haunt Reed

If you were to draw Reed's morning on graph paper, it'd look like a seismograph plotting an earthquake: Up and down, up and down.

He had two weigh-fish right away, then lost four straight would-be keepers, which left him with only two in the box at 12:30.

He then hooked a 2 1/2-pounder, which would've normally gone back in the lake. Instead, he put it in the box because he knew time was running out and he needed a limit to have a shot at retaining the lead.

"I'm thinking, 'I better put this in the livewell - I've got to have some fish,'" he said. "I fished there for another 10 minutes to see if I could catch another one and then went back to fizz it and it had already died and I was like, 'Man.'

"Then I moved to another place and caught a 4 1/2 and a 4 1/4 boom, boom and I got to a point where I had a 2 1/2-pounder and nothing littler than 4 1/4. It's going well, but that mistake may cost me there."

He talked on day 1 about how the bottom-huggers weren't triggering and he experienced it again today.

A dead fish and a lost fish could hurt Matt Reed in the end.

"They just don't want to bite," he noted. "They started biting about 2:30 today. I could see them and at 2:30, they looked active and I could drop into them and catch them, but I had to head in."

He caught and lost fish on three different spots today and has had company on only one of them.

As for the four that got away, he said, "One of them was a rookie mistake – something I hadn't done in years. Smallmouths tend to run so fast and I got him to the boat and he took off running around my trolling motor and broke me off. I haven't had that happen in forever. I can't believe I did that. That's 1st-grade stuff. The other ones just pulled off. I've not had any trouble losing fish with the hook I'm using. After that it was smooth."

3rd: Evers Hanging In There

For as long of a run as Evers is making, maximizing fishing time is critical and boat control has been key for the defending Erie/Niagara champ.

"It has everything to do with it," he said after catching 21-11 today, one of five 21-plus sacks. "You have to be able to get there and be able to get there with all of your stuff in one piece. You have to be able to know how to position your boat in those kinds of waves and how to get your bait where those fish are."

He noted the bite was a bit off the pace from day 1 and he had three 5-pounders pull off today.

"I don't know what the deal is but I lost some big ones that I'd sure like to have had," he added.

4th: Kiriyama Started Slow

Kiriyama's day didn't start the right way. He made the long run, came off pad, then struck out at his hotspot where he'd "caught them every cast" the day before.

He went fishless for the first hour, but then reconnected with good bites on his third stop and started "catching them good."

Also notable was he said Evers and Rick Morris were in the same area where he caught them last year en route to his 2nd-place finish.

About whether or not he thinks he can win, he said: "I don't know. It depends on the weather."

5th: Martens Lost Monster

As noted, Martens lost one of Dunkirk's trademarks – a 7-pound smallmouth. That's equivalent to a 12- or 13-pound largemouth at a place like Sam Rayburn.

Photo: BassFan
Edwin Evers notes: 'I don't know what the deal is but I lost some big ones that I'd sure like to have had.'

"It was on 7-pound line and a Roboworm," he said. "I must have drifted a couple of football fields fighting it. I did everything I could. It would come up, shake, then run back down to bottom. I couldn't do anything. It came right up to the boat and I saw it. It was a monster. I've seen a lot of 6-pounders, and this thing dwarfed it."

He weighed a 5-09 today and fished his day-1 stuff, plus a few new areas. In total, he's only been to three areas, and he noted he held on structure today, rather than drift.

About his last-minute arrival at check-in, he said: "It was gorgeous when I left Dunkirk, but I'm lucky I didn't fish anymore. I made it in with 6 minutes left."

6th: Murray Ran Same Stuff

John Murray ran the same program with the same baits and the winds allowed him to do a little more.

"I used (Berkley) Gulp! and I got to fish deeper today because the wind wasn't as bad," he said. "I didn't have to drift.

"I have two spots. I'll catch three or four off each and that's it."

On such big water, he said it's important to have backup plans in the event the winds shift, which they frequently are known to do.

"You're going to need two or three spots," he added. "My goal is to get in the Top 50 so I did that. Now I'm going to go have fun and start wasting on them."

8th: Faircloth In Early Again

Faircloth was among the first pros to weigh in on day 1 (he quit early). He was the first one to the scales today and brought in another 20-pound limit, which will continue to make the chase for AOY an interesting one.

He said conditions were more fishable today compared to day 1 when the west winds denied pros the ability to hold on their spots for a significant period of time or even get to secondary areas.

"The conditions were real good," he said. "The wind's kicking up now like it did yesterday and it's only going to get stronger, but from the time I got out there to the time I left, I was able to hold on my spots a lot better today.

"Yesterday, it was hard with the trolling motor to hold on a spot because you're after these little spots and it's hard to get to them when you're drifting over them."

He caught three keepers on his first spot this morning then finished off his limit at his second spot. He fished the same spots as yesterday and revealed he fished alongside Kevin VanDam, the man he's chasing in the AOY standings, this afternoon. He still has other spots he's confident in that he hasn't fished yet.

"I probably have three of more spots that hold the same potential and if I need to go there I will," he added. "But if I don't, that's fine."

His equipment has held up pretty well, aside for an aerator pump that went bad today for no apparent reason.

As for how he's catching his fish, he said he caught a couple fish right under the boat on day 1 but he's seen a tendency for the fish to spook if they sense a boat overhead.

"Sometimes, you're better off just backing off a bit and casting to them," he noted. "I'm seeing a bunch of fish."

19th: Howell Fishing Shallow

Randy Howell's on a different program than most everyone else. Instead of targeting the deep-water fish in 30 to 60 feet, he's up shallow and working in current. How shallow?

"I'm fishing in 8 to 12 feet," he said. "I enjoy fishing like that because I don't like fishing deep out there. I haven't had to go way offshore yet like I thought I was going to have to. There's been more fish moving in every day."

He's fishing outside the mouth of the Niagara River and has had the area to himself for 2 days. He believes the potential for a 20-plus bag is there, if he can avoid another expired fish.

"I had 15 for most of the day and in the last hour, I got a 3 1/2 and a 4 1/2 and that booted me up. There's so much current where I'm fishing that they fight so hard before I get them in. They get so tired and it's hard to keep them alive. Both days, I've had one die and both times, it's a little 2-12 or 2-13 and I've had to throw back 3 1/2-pounders.

"I had to dropshot a lot of them up today," he added. "Yesterday I got them fast with action baits."

22nd: Bondy Bumming

Asked to quantify his disappointment after weighing 14-12 today, Jon Bondy said, "Big time."

His big fish disappeared and the fish he was on weren't getting to the hook so he had to downsize from a 4" Gulp! Alive minnow (day 1) to a 3" Gulp! Alive leech (today). While he didn't hammer a 20-pound sack like day 1, he still made the cut and is just 3 1/2 pounds out of the Top 12.

"My big fish weren't there and I lost a bunch because they were just mouthing the bait," he said. "Tomorrow, who knows if I have to go with the big bait or go with the small thing?

"I'm disappointed, (but) it could've been a lot worse. I was really struggling in the morning. It's been a morning bite and I was really worried, but I ended up catching them good all day. Once the afternoon came, it seemed better. I got more dialed in on my good spot."

The spot he's on hasn't seen any pressure, which could bode well for the lone Canadian on the pro side.

"There's been one boat 200 yards away and that's the only bass boat I've seen in 2 days," he said. "It's near a very common area and it's great. I like to have it that way."

30th: McClelland Makes His Move

With a 15-01 bag on day 1, Mike McClelland was right over the cut in 49th place. He followed that up with 18-03 to jump into the Top 30 and is within shouting distance (5 pounds) of the Top-12 cut.

"It was a lot better day," he said. "It was a day where you could actually get out there and enjoy yourself. I caught a lot of fish and the quality was a lot better today. The first five I put in the box yesterday didn't weigh but 13 pounds and today, the first five probably weighed 15 and I was able to cull four or five times."

He didn't fish nearly as many spots as he'd hoped, but he was able to fish more thoroughly where he was.

"Yesterday, I kept trying to run around and you have to let the wind dictate where you move to next," he noted. "You tried to criss-cross the waves whenever you could, and today it was just one of those days where I got onto a couple of key areas and just stuck with it."

His fish didn't change at all from day 1 and he was able to target them better.

"Yesterday, with the wind blowing, I had to try to fish vertically for most of them," he noted. "When I'd see them on the graph, I'd drop straight to them. Today, it allowed you do that a little bit easier."

43rd: Campbell Still Learning

Scott Campbell came from 60th place after day 1 to 43rd today, thanks to an 18-00 bag and a little help from the back of the boat.

He fished today with Buffalo native Tim Creighton, who's the day-2 leader on the co-angler side, and picked up some valuable knowledge.

"I'm still learning how to fish out here," he said. "He's a local guy and he was showing me the baits he used. It was a simple thing.

"We were sitting there dragging tubes and he was getting bit like 3-to-1, him-to-me. I'm like, 'Dude, what's going on?' He says, 'Look.' He was taking his rod tip from up here (10 o'clock) to down here (against the water) and it made all the difference. All of a sudden you were in contact with the bottom and it was perfect and you started getting bit. That's how subtle it is out here.

"These smallies are finicky," he added. "They can see so well and once you start doing what they want, you'll catch them. It's pretty cool."

Additional Notes

14th: Kevin VanDam (19-15 today) – "The weather was what happened. It still wasn't easy, but I tried to keep focused on a few areas. It can happen so fast here, but there's a lot of lulls. Today was just a lot better day to fish and I expected to catch them today. I know I need to catch them (tomorrow). This is the kind of place where you can break down and lose a day's catch and see big points swings. These guys are so good you can't let up at all."

16th: Gary Klein (19-09 today) – "The difference today? I gave myself time to fish." (He left Dunkirk early with just two fish yesterday.–Ed.)

52nd: Bobby Lane (17-12 today) – "Today was a lot better. Coming into it, I didn't have confidence on this type of water. I'd never fished Erie before. But yesterday I got the confidence in my head. Even in the big waves, you'll still float."

Notable

> Day 2 stats – 106 anglers, 101 limits, 3 fours, 2 twos, no zeroes.

> An oft-heard phrase the past 2 days is, "You can't compete in the (Niagara) River." But Bill Lowen sounds like he's onto something in the Niagara after a 19-13 catch today put him in a tie for 9th with Shaw Grigsby. "I hope it blows 30 mph tomorrow and you keep us in the river – that's all I'm going to say," Lowen said.
